So, the US troops are now coming home and leaving Iraq. Well, Christmas is coming and that makes for decent photo-shoots back in America. No doubt the US government is hoping that Iraq is now a puppet state. Perhaps the New Year will see the calls for war crime trials growing internationally. They should, because the behaviour of US soldiers in Iraq has at times been a disgrace to the human race, and at a minimum adds to the evidence that people, military especially, actually get pleasure out of killing people: see Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking [1997 Penguin Books]. First, it seems, people are dehumanized, as an alien enemy, and invading soldiers not advised of the humanity of the aliens they are liquidating. Then, after the event, many of the murdering force go into denial, not being able to believe that is what they just did - Tony Blair and all US military commanders please note that your God will not save you from reality, there are other gods and other rulers of the human spirit. The following comment from Sean at Facts for Working People had to be made.
