I'd be very interested in people's comments on this news.

On the one hand, it is surely right that the products of public sector services are available freely and accessibly to the public they are meant to serve, but, on the other, it is also surely right that writers, like other creatives, should be able to obtain a reasonable return on thier labour?

Moreover, if reseearch-based universities are increasingly privately funded, having been persistently underfunded for decade after decade, why should they be forced to give away their produce? When plumbers or painters & decorators work for the universities they can charge way over the market rate for their services. So, is the public component of university work there to be shafted at both ends?
